Frequently Asked Questions...

Whether you are eager to buy a loved one an introductory lesson, you want the challenge of learning how to fly just for fun and private use, or you wondered what it would be like to change career and become a professional helicopter pilot or instructor, the investment in time and money can be huge....

Here are some common queries which might answer those nagging doubts or affirm that the choices you are about to make will lead you down a new exciting path!!

When do I need to do my medical?

If your going to do your PPL then you need a Class 2 medical anytime before you go first solo. If you are planning on going through to CPL, then it's a good idea to do a Class 1 medical at the outset so that you know you can get one before committing yourself to the training and expense of the commercial course.

What are the Fit and Proper Person requirements?

Prior to the flight test being sat, you will need to supply a current police check from any country you have lived in for the last five years. You will also need a NZ Land Transport check completed which lists any driving convictions. You will need to supply a utility bil from your current home address having your name on it, as well as a copy of your passport or driving license. All this needs to be certified (can be by the CFI) and the appropriate form completed prio to being submitted with your ppl pass papers.

Does the CPL include a PPL?

Yes it does. You do the PPL first then complete the CPL, but the CPL course costs include the PPL

Can I and where do I get a job when i've finished my training?

The worldwide helicopter fleet market is growing between 6-20% and with a wowful lack of expereinced and new pilots coming on to fill the drivers seat.

You've spent a lot of time, energy and money and now understandably want to start to make it pay. Basically its upto you. Passing the flight test either at CPL or Instructor level is just the tick in the box, now you have to "work" to find those few jobs and gain a foothold in this fabulous industry. Its now all about your committment, dedication and willingness to sweep hanger floors, possibly knock on every door in a country and go the extra mile...then eagerly accept the odd ferry flight that might come up. Before you know it though you should be on way earning not very much for a couple of years until you have built up those precious hours.

Have a look at the CPL section for full details of job prospects but please do not hesitate to ask us any questions you may personnally have.

What about accomodation costs etc?

Generally, its about $120 per night in a local bed and breakfast but if you are staying longer then you could pick up a short term flat/house share for $150 per week in the North Shore, Albany or Orewa areas. Either way you will need a car as Auckland bus links are not reliable and will give you flexibility whilst you are here. You will have to arrange these yourself, but we can point you in the right direction if you get stuck.

Can I convert my overseas license?

Yes you can as long as its from an ICAO country. For PPL, you will need to do a flight check with a B or C Cat and as long as you medical is current, this is all sent off for issue to the CAA. For CPL, you must have completed our syllabus and have done 150hr and a flight test. If you haven't done 250 hrs on commercial operations, then you will also need to sit all six exams. If you hold an Australian licence, then the same applies but you will not ned to sit a flight test as you can convert under the trans tasmen agreement.

Not with us you can't. There are only a few providers in NZ, the closet is Ardmore airfield. You will have be a full time student and you will have to sign up for the commercial course.

Can I do it through the student loan scheme at NSHT

Yes we do! From 2015 we have a limited allocation of Student funded places for eligible and selected students. We are NZQA accredited to offer Diploma's in Aviation to Levels 5+6. We have an accident free track record and have close links to major commercial operators and we are the closet training company to Auckland city. Each student will have a self funded portion that you will need to pay up front, you can then borrow upto $70,000 over two years through the Studylink scheme and NSHT will then offset some of the remainder of fees through our TEC contribution to help you finish the course. Please go to our dedicated NZQA courses page for further information and to download the Student Handbook.

Can we train on our own private aircraft at NSHT

We are delighted to be able to offer you the option of training whith one of our experienced instructors. It is subject to instructor availability and our standard terms which can be found on the PPL and CPL Course cost pages. It is also subject to you implicitly agreeing that either the instructor or NSHT are not held liable in any way for any financial or insurance costs in the event of any incident or accident.
